Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor of the maxila

Summary We present a case of a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor [MPNST] of the maxilla corresponding to a 12 year old male who had a painful, ulcerated rapid growing tumor. Histology revealed the presence of a tumor consisting of fusiform cells with abundant mitosis, with negative cytokeratins, actin, desmin, myoglobin and factor VIII. In contrast, the protein S-100 was positive. MPNST was not associated with signs of Neurofibromatosis Type 1. The patient was surgically intervened and received radiotherapy, then died within 10 months posterior to surgical intervention after suffering recurrence.

Capillaries within human skeletal muscle fibers.

Internalized capillaries, i.e. capillaries within muscle fibers, represent a rare myopathological feature. This was systematically studied in 923 muscle biopsy specimens and found in 24, chiefly in the gastrocnemius muscle, more rarely in the biceps and quadriceps muscles affecting males more often than females and most frequently associated with juvenile spinal muscular atrophy or Becker's muscular dystrophy. Internalized capillaries, often multiple, ran along the long axis of the muscle fiber within an "internalized" extracellular space and were almost exclusively seen in type I myofibers. Summary Xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis (XC) is a chronic inflammatory lesion of the gallbladder histologically characterized by the presence of varying amounts of foamy histiocytes in the inflammatory infiltrate. In this study a review of 63 cases selected from 1207 surgically removed gallbladders is presented; the percentage found (5.2%) is slightly higher than that of previous reports showing that XC is less uncommon than generally believed. The intraclonal and interclonal phenotypic heterogeneity in a rhabdomyosarcoma cell line with abortive imitation of embryonic myogenesis

Three distinct subpopulations (A, B, C) derived from a dimethylbenzanthracene-induced rat rhabdomyosarcoma were established as permanent cell lines. Although the clonal nature of each of these subpopulations was confirmed by repeated recloning procedures, a striking intraclonal phenotypic heterogeneity was observed. By means of immunofluorescence microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, it could be shown that these subpopulations closely recapitulate stages of embryonic rhabdomyogenesis both in vitro and in vivo, but differ in their particular range of maximum differentiation. Primary Rhabdomyosarcoma Mimicking a Small Cell Sarcoma of Bone: A Nude Mice Xenograft, Cytogenetic, and Molecular Approach

Small cell sarcomas of bone are difficult to classify and diagnose. The present case deals with such a tumor in which the original biopsy and the resected specimen, studied by histology before chemotherapy, provided no final information about its real nature. Thus several techniques were applied to discern its histogenesis and biology. Myogenin proved positive in isolated cells of the primary neoplasm but was extensively expressed in nude mice xenografts. Electron microscopy confirmed the existence of myofilaments. Radial Scar Versus Tubular Carcinoma of the Breast

Summary The present study is focused on the differential diagnosis between radial scar (RS) and tubular carcinoma (TC) using morphometrical and cytophotometrical analysis (static and flow cytometry) of a number of histologically well-established RS cases, (17 lesions) compared with 6 early infiltrating small TC with sclerotic stroma and pseudo-RS fields. One case displayed both RS and TC foci in contiguity. Mean nuclear area was larger in the group of tubular carcinomas (51.0 μ 2 ) than in the cases o f radial sclerosis (38.30 μ 2 ). Ultrastructural pathology of dermal axons and Schwann cells in lysosomal diseases

Recently, it has been suggested that c-myc expression might correlate with estrogen receptor (ER) status and metastatic spread in ovarian cancer. In this study, expression of c-myc mRNA in 90 epithelial ovarian carcinomas was determined using the S1 nuclease protection assay. Expression of c-myc mRNA was detectable in 27 of 90 tumors. There was no significant association between c-myc mRNA expression and metastatic spread, survival time, FIGO stage, or histologic grade and type. C-myc mRNA was expressed in 45% of ER-positive tumors but only 24% of ER-negative tumors (p = 0.094; Fisher's exact test).
